Shoot Planning and Preparation

During our pre-shoot conversation and planning session, we talked about who she, who she serves, and how her business is changing. In addition, we discussed what aesthetic she wanted to create on her website and on social media. We discussed the color palette that spoke to her, ideas on wardrobe and styling, the option of including professional hair and makeup (she chose to do her own), as well as locations that would help us tell her story and meaningfully connect with her prospective clients.

Jenny wanted editorial-style, approachable portraits and imagery that felt alive and captured movement and details. We identified a few locations that supported those requirements including some urban backdrops, areas with greenery mixed with natural textures and backdrops, and her own office/studio space.

The Shoot

Jenny selected a half-day shoot and chose to do her own hair and makeup. Upon my arrival, we finalized her wardrobe selection and our plans and headed out to our shoot destinations, ending back at her office space. Alternate wardrobe and styling were used at each location so the final pictures didn’t feel like they were all from one shoot and provided more visual variety.

The Results

Shot with natural light and inspired by Jenny, the happy yellows and organic greens infused by her wardrobe, I hope the resulting pictures I created for Jenny evoke a feeling of warmth, approachability, and connection. I feel like we achieved her vision and I’m looking forward to a future session where we hope to expand her branding and content by capturing her interactions with her group classes and clients.

Alexa Rodell, LCSW, is an integrative psychotherapist. She’s intuitive, deep, beautiful, fun, and so, so wise. She’s not cookie cutter and she’s not what I think of when I think “psychotherapist.” She’s vibrant, peaceful, joyful, kind, and connected. I asked her to share a little about her work.

Alexa wanted an inviting, relaxed, organic feel that was true to her approach with clients and to herself. We identified a number of locations that supported those requirements including natural open spaces, inviting shared spaces, areas with greenery mixed with natural textures and backdrops, and her own personal space.

The Shoot

Alexa selected a half day shoot and chose to add hair and makeup. Staci, one of my team of hair and makeup artists, arrived at Alexa’s home and prepared her for the shoot. Upon my arrival, we finalized our plans and headed out to our multiple planned shoot destinations including a special beach location, organic themed outdoor shops and dining, and finally back to her personal space. Alternate wardrobe and styling were used at each location so the final pictures didn’t feel like they were all from one shoot and provided more visual variety.

The Results

Shot with natural light and great care, I hope the resulting pictures I created for Alexa evoke a sense of joy, invitation, and warmth. I feel like we achieved her vision and I’m looking forward to our next session where we’ll be expanding her branding and content and capturing her interactions and relationship with her clients within the setting of her new office space.
